STATEMENT BY THE INSPECTOR GENERAL OF POLICE ON THE FORTH COMING PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS

In view of the forth-coming presidential election, the Zambia Police Service wishes to assure the nation that enough security measures have been put in place to make sure that the electorate vote in a peaceful environment.
The number of officers deployed in all the 6, 456 polling stations has been increased from 7500 to 8, 300 in order to ensure the maintenance of law and order as well as upholding the Electoral Code of Conduct during and after the elections. The electorate is therefore, urged not to feel intimidated by the presence of the Police Officers as they will be there to protect them and the Electoral Commission of Zambia personnel, equipment and materials.
In an event of anyone breaching the electoral code of conduct, such a report should be brought to the attention of the police officers at the polling station for immediate action.
Members of the public are required to leave the polling stations immediately after casting their vote failure to which they will be forced to do so by the police as this can be a source of conflict.
During this period, political leaders and stakeholders are being urged to restrain their cadres from being involved in acts of violence. They should also advise their cadres not to camp at the totaling centre in Lusaka but leave the task to their representatives.
Police officers will be on high alert to arrest and take to court all those who will be involved in any form of violence before during and after the elections.
It is important to secure the peace of this country collectively and this can only be attained by adhering to the rules and regulations governing the citizenry.
