The Zambia Police Service has the mandate to maintain law and order. It has among other obligation of ensuring that citizens' human rights and freedoms are protected and promoted among others.

In order for the Service to carry out these obligations, it has to put in place effective policing mechanisms, and one of the mechanisms is ensuring that the institution has the right equipment at its disposal. To that effect, the Zambia Police Service has acquired new  artillery anti-riot equipment that will help it effectively deal with any riotous conduct.

The equipment acquired are three Marauders for Paramilitary and 15 Mavericks for general policing, which includes crowd control. The Marauder a is multipurpose equipment that uses rubber bullets, tear moke and live bullets to signal warning.

Inspector General of Police, Mr Kakoma Kanganja said police officers would undergo training in the use and maintenance of the equipment.

Contrary to reports by some sections of media that the new acquired artillery equipment is for brutalising the citizens, Mr Kankanja said that the equipment  was  meant to protect citizens by maintaining law and order and not to brutalise them. He has since warned law breakers that they will be dealt with according to the law.
