STATEMENT ON THE 2016 FOURTH QUARTER ROAD TRAFFIC ACCIDENT STATISTICS

During the fourth quarter of 2016, a total number of 7,341 Road traffic accidents were recorded out of which 386 were fatal, 769 were serious injuries with 1,373 being slight injuries while 4,813 were recorded as damages only.

458 people lost their lives in the fourth quarter of 2016 as compared to 444 people in the fourth quarter of 2015 which represents an increase by 14 people who died in the road traffic accident.

1,479 people were seriously injured in the fourth quarter of 2016 as compared to 1,032 in the fourth quarter of 2015 representing an increase of 447 people who were injured.

1,901 people were slightly injured in the fourth quarter of 2016 as compared to 1,778 in the fourth quarter of 2015 representing an increase of 123 people who were slightly injured.

Lusaka recorded the highest number of accidents with a total of 3,984 from which 107 people died, with 199 sustaining serious injuries followed by Copperbelt which had 1047 with 55 deaths, Central Provinces which recorded 564 with 55 deaths each. Eastern had 416 accidents with 42 death, Southern had 416 accidents in which 35 people died, North Western had 318 accidents with 25 deaths while Muchinga had 152 with 20 deaths, Northern 17 while  Western had 156 accidents with 14 deaths.

Most of the accidents that happened during the year 2016 were attributed to human error as they resulted from excessive speed, misjudging clearance distance, failing to keep to the near sideand cutting in.
