2019 SECOND QUARTER GBV STATISTICS

During the second quarter of 2019, there were 6,139 GBV cases reported country wide. A total of 583 were child defilement cases representing 9.5% of the reported cases of which 10 cases were against boys whilst 573were against girls.
Lusaka province recorded the highest number of child defilement cases with 250 translating to 42.9% of the child defilement cases reported country wide. Southern Province recorded 81 cases translating to 14%,followed by Central Province with 60cases or 10.3%, Eastern Province had 58 cases or 10%and Copperbelt Province recorded 50cases translating to 8.6%of the reported defilement cases.

Other Provinces recorded as follows; North Western 28 or 4.8%, Muchinga, 20 or 3.4%, Northern 14 or 2.4%, Western 11 or 2 %, Luapula, eight (08) or 1.4%, Airport, two (02) or 0.3% and Tazara division recorded one (01) case or 0.2%.

145 cases of rape and 19 attempted rape cases were recorded during the period under review. The country also recorded 46 cases of indecent Assault of which 38 were women, five (05) girls and three (03) boys as victims. 12 cases were Indecent Assault cases involving 10 women and two (02) girls as victims.
Further, the country recorded 20 GBV related murder cases out of which 11 victims were women translating to 55%, six (06) men representing 30%, and three (03) girls translating to 15% of the reported murder cases.

There were 1,756 cases of Assault OABH recorded countrywide representing 28.6% of the reported GBV cases out of which 1,513 were female victims against 243male victims. Lusaka province recorded the highest number of Assault OABH cases with 503 or 28.6% followed by Central Province which recorded447 cases translating to 25.5% and Eastern had188 representing 10.7% of Assault OAHB cases reported.

Other Provinces recorded as follows; Copperbelt175cases or 10%,Western had 108 or 6.2%, North Western had 105 cases or 6%,Southern recorded 84 cases or 4.8%, Muchinga, 83 or 4.7% cases, Northern 42 or 2.4%, Tazara Division had nine (09) cases or 0.5%,Luapula recorded eight (08) or 0.5% and Airport Division had four (04) or 0.2% of the reported Assault OABH cases.
During the same period under review, 11cases of human trafficking were recorded of which 10 were from Western Province and one (01) was from Muchinga. Other cases were as follows: Failing to provide for necessaries of life were 446 while Neglecting to provide for necessaries were 335 translating to 7.3% and 5.5% of the reported cases respectively.

Out of 6,139 GBV cases reported country wide, 604 cases representing 9.8% were taken to court resulting in 83 convictions, 05 were acquittals or 0.8%, 48 were withdrawn at court representing 8% and 468 representing 77.5% are pending in various courts of law around the country. 3,104 cases were withdrawn at Police Stations while 2,431 are still under investigations translating to 50.6% and 39.6% respectively of the reported cases.

A comparison with the second quarter of 2018, 6,074 cases were recorded countrywide against 6,139cases recorded in 2019 showing an increase of 65 cases translating to 1.1% increase. Defilement cases reported in the second quarter of 2018 were 734 against 583 in the second quarter of 2019 translating to a decrease by 151 cases or 26% decrease.

On Assault OABH cases, in 2018 second quarter, there were 1,656cases recorded against 1,756 in the second quarter of 2019and this indicates an increase of 100 cases translating to 5.7% increase.

In 2018 second quarter, the country recorded 15murder cases against 20 cases in the 2nd quarter of 2019resulting in an increase of 05cases.

From these statistics, it is evident that Gender Based Violence cases have continued to rise and that a lot of cases are being withdrawn by complainants. There is still need for all stakeholders including communities to collaborate and heighten the fight against the scourge. We are alive to the fact that some cases of GBV still remain unreported. There is urgent need to enhance support structures for victims of GBV.
