THIRD QUARTER ROAD TRAFFIC ACCIDENT STATISTICS
During the third quarter of 2019, a total number of 8,113 accidents were recorded of which 370 were Fatal in which 434 persons were killed,767 were serious road traffic accidents in which 1,379 persons were seriously injured,1,529 were Slight injury road traffic accidents in which 2,305 persons were slightly injured bringing the total number of casualties to 5,447.
Lusaka Province recorded the highest number of road traffic accidents with 4,359, followed by Copperbelt with 1,263 whilst Northern Province recorded the least with 143 road traffic accidents.
In comparison with the third quarter of 2018, 7,915 road traffic accidents were recorded as compared to 8,113 road traffic accidents which were recorded in this year’s third quarter. The figures show an increase by 198 road traffic accidents.
In the same period of 2018, 394 road traffic accidents were recorded as fatal road traffic accidents in which 476 persons were killed as compared to 370 fatal road traffic accidents where 434 persons were killed in the third quarter of 2019. The records show a reduction by 24 fatal road traffic accidents and 42 persons killed.
In the same vain 1,443 persons were seriously injured in 790 serious road traffic accidents in the third quarter of 2018 as compared to 1,379 persons seriously serious injured in 767 serious road traffic accidents in 2019.There is a decrease in persons seriously injured by 64 and also a decrease by 23 serious road traffic accidents.
1,517 were slight injury road traffic accidents in which 2,170 persons were slightly injured in 2018 as compared to 1,529 slight road traffic accidents where 2,305 persons were slightly injured in the third quarter of 2019. The figures show an increase in persons slightly injured and slight injury road traffic accidents by 12 and 135 respectively.
On damage only road traffic accidents, 5,214 were recorded in the third quarter of 2018 as compared to 5,447 recorded in 2019.The records show an increase by 233 in damages only road traffic accidents.
During the third quarter of 2019, 32,964 road traffic offences were recorded and K 11,568,404.00 was raised in Admission of Guilt fines as compared to 35,471 road traffic offences recorded in the third quarter of 2018 where K 11,183,763.00 was raised in admission of guilt fines. The figures show a decrease in road traffic offences by 2,507 and an increase in admission of guilt fines collected by K384, 641.00.

We appeal to all road users to observe road rules and regulations. More interventions have been put in place by the Zambia Police in collaboration with all other Stake holders such as the Road Transport Safety Agency (RTSA).
