2021 THIRD QUARTER GENDER BASED VIOLENCE CASES STATISTICS.

A total of 4,042 cases of Gender Based Violence (GBV) were reported Countrywide during the Third Quarter of 2021 compared to the Third Quarter of 2020 in which 4,620 cases of GBV were recorded, showing a reduction of 578 cases translating to a 12.5% reduction. The 2021 Third Quarter Gender Based Violence disaggregated Data indicates that 1,027 child victims were abused countrywide representing 25.4% of all the victims of Gender Based Violence. Out of the 1,027children, 850 were girls representing 82.8%while 177 were boys representing 17.2% of all abused child victims respectively. 2,437 women and 578 men were abused countrywide representing 60.3% and 14.3% respectively.The 2021 Third Quarter Crime Statistical Report indicates that a total number of 1,758 victims and 1,520 offenders where counseled, by Victim Support Unit officers countrywide.

The 2021 Third Quarter GBV Crime Report shows that 685 Sexual Offences were recorded representing 17% of all the reported cases. Out of these, 512 victims were girls translating to 74.8%, 153 victims were women translating to 22.3%,14 victims were boys translating to 2 %, whilst 6 victims were men translating to 0.9%.

Still under Sexual offences a total of496 cases of Child defilement translating to 72.4% were recorded, of which 486 were girls and 10 were boys, representing 98%and 2% of all the reported defilement cases.
Lusaka Province recorded the highest number of child defilement cases with 130 cases translating to 26.2% of all child defilement cases reported country wide.

Central Province recorded 81 cases translating to 16.3%, followed by Southern Province with 75 cases translating to 15.1%.

Eastern Province recorded 65 cases translating to 13.1% and Copperbelt Province recorded 46 cases translating to 9.3% of all the reported defilement cases.

North Western recorded 27 cases translating to 5.4%, Muchinga Province recorded 25 translating to 5% Western Province   recorded 22 translating to 4.4%.
Northern Province recorded 21 cases translating to 4.2 % and Luapula recorded four cases of Defilement representing 0.8% of all reported Child defilement cases respectively.
 
Still under Sexual Offences; 100 rape cases were reported, 16 attempted rape cases were recorded during the period under review 40 cases of indecent Assault were recorded countrywide out of which 24 victims were women, 14 girls, and two were boys.14 cases of incest were recorded in which eight victims were girls five women and one male respectively.

Under Physical Abuse, the country recorded 2,427 cases translating to 60% of the reported cases, 1,849 cases were women translating to 76.2%, 374 victims were men translating to 15.4%,106 were girls translating to 4.4%,98 were boys translating to 4%

Out of 2,427 Physical abuse cases, 2,157 cases of Assault OABH were recorded country wide representing 88.9%. Out of the 2,157cases of Assault OABH, 1,800 were females translating to 83.4% while 357 were males translating to 16.6%. Two cases of Grievously Bodily Harm (GBH) were also recorded during the period under review of which one victim was a female and another one  was a girl translating to 50%, each respectively.

Further, during the period under review, the country recorded 20 murder cases translating to 0.8% compared to the third quarter of 2020 crime statistical report in which 25 cases of murder were recorded showing a decrease of five cases translating to 20%  decrease.
Out of 20 cases of murder recorded country wide, 12 victims were women translating to 60%, No victims were men translating to Zero Percent,Five were girls translating 25% and three were boys translating to15%  while two cases of attempted murder were recorded during Third Quarter of 2021.

During the period under review, the country recorded 2,427 cases of Assault OABH cases representing 60% compared to the Third quarter of 2020 report in which 2,043 cases of Assault OABH were recorded showing an increase of 384 translating to 18.8% increase,
    
Central Province recorded 419 cases of Assault OABH out of the total cases country wide translating to 17.3%. Lusaka Province recorded 389 cases translating to 16%. Copperbelt and Muchinga Province recorded 280 each translating 11.5%.Eastern Province recorded 269 representing 11.1%, North Western 161 cases representing 6.6%, Southern Province recorded   146 representing 6%, Western Province recorded 133 cases representing 5.5%, Northern Province recorded 67 cases representing 2.8% Tazara recorded 13 cases translating to 0.5%, Luapula Province and Airport recorded Nil cases representing Zero Percent of all the reported Assault OABH cases.

Under Economic Abuse, 692 cases were recorded country wide translating to 17.1%. 278 cases of Neglecting to Provide Necessaries and 260 cases of Failing to Provide Necessaries of life were recorded translating to 40.2% and 37.6% of all reported cases respectively.

Under Emotional or Psychological abuse, VSU recorded 224 cases translating to 5.5%. 86 cases of the use of Insulting language was recorded of which 44 were men, 41 women and One girl. Further, a total of 48 cases of Threatening Violence were recorded of which 32 were females and 15 males and One boy translating to 66.7%, 31.3% and 2% respectively.

Finally, out of the 4,042 GBV cases reported countrywide, 681 cases representing 16.9% Were  taken to court resulting in 97 convictions translating to 14.2%, seven acquittals or  1%, 80  withdraws or 11.8% and 497 representing 73% pending in various courts of law around the country. On the other hand, 1,776 cases are still pending under investigations while 1,585 cases were withdrawn at police stations translating to 52.8 % and 47.2% respectively of the reported cases.

A comparison with the Third quarter of 2020 which recorded 4,620 cases shows a decrease of 578 cases against 4,042 cases recorded in 2021 translating to a 12.5% decrease.
Gender Based Violence cases continues to occur in communities therefore as Zambia Police Service urges members of the public to continue reporting these cases to police so that perpetrators are brought to book.
