MEDICAL DIRECTORATE

The Medical directorate is among the six directorates under the Zambia Police Service. It is being headed by a Director who is a Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) by rank. The directorate is fully responsible for the health of Police Officers and their families.

In its core function of ensuring that the Zambia Police Force has a healthy workforce that is free from diseases through the provision of quality health services, the directorate is running a fully-fledged grade A Hospital in Lusaka’ Sikanze Camp, which is equivalent to that of a district health Hospital.

The hospital is situated in the heart of Sikanze Police Camp which lies on the Northern side of Madras and Eastern side of Lusaka Civic centre. The hospital carters for the entire population of the Zambia Police Service which stands at 18,000, although this is beyond the figures since it also extends its services to the surrounding communities and other areas such as Chilanga and Chongwe.

The Hospital recently opened a maternity ward and is offering various services which are antenatal, delivery, post-natal, family planning, under five clinic and Antiretroviral Therapy (ART) services. Other services are Tuberculosis, Physiotherapy, Radiography, Scanning, Ex-ray, Laboratory tests, Nutrition, Environmental health, Social welfare and counselling.

The hospital is fully run by police officers who are qualified in different fields that include; Doctors, Clinical officers, Physiotherapists, Nurses, Radiographers, Laboratory Technicians, Pharmacists and Midwives among others.

Chain of Clinics

The hospital is a referral centre for a chain of Zambia Police clinics dotted across the country which are also under this Police Medical Directorate. The clinics are as follows; Kamfinsa, which is also called Chavuma in Kitwe, Peter Singogo in Ndola, Kabwe, Kasama, Paramilitary-Sondela, Lusaka West, Livingstone, State lodge and Lilayi police clinics.

All the clinics are manned by registered nurses; except for Kamfinsa, Lilayi and State lodge which are being managed by Clinical Officers. All the members of staff at the above mentioned clinics are police officers. For the smooth operation of the health facility, the hospital strength has been beefed up by a few civilian staff.

With the bed space of 28, Police Officers who seek medical attention do not pay any user fees, as all drugs are given free of charge. This offer does not only apply to officers but to the family members as well and the members of the public. However, other services such as laboratory tests attract a minimal fee. The Zambia Police medical policy demands that all Police officers must go through the Police Hospital before going to the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) for specialised treatment.
