Diplomatic Security Services Unit (DSSU) is one of the recent sections established in the Zambia Police Service with a view to providing security to the diplomatic community accredited to Zambia, visiting dignitaries and most importantly present a guaranteed security service to the international dignitaries as provided for in the police mission statement as well as the Vienna charter on diplomacy to which Zambia is a part.

At inception the diplomatic security services unit operated as a subsidiary unit of the Zambia police service public relations unit with the latter mandated to provide image building locally while the former internationally. Emerging on a similar foundation of image building, the two sections are functionally inseparable and periodically share assignments that carry with it the duty to reflect the image of the Zambian security system both locally and internationally.

The core mandate of the unit spins around the diplomatic community accredited to Zambia by creating an enabling working environment devoid of insecurity so that they are able to discharge their representative obligations to the best of their abilities. The other duties which reinforce the mentioned mandate include receiving reports from embassy officials related to crime or any other matter on which embassy personnel may require counsel.  Providing VIP security services to diplomats and ensuring that all necessary logistics are put in place each time the Unit is called upon. Undertaking escort functions within and outside Lusaka to diplomats and other visiting state dignitaries, and to do motorized patrols in all embassy localities in order to create confidence among the diplomatic community.

During police functions the diplomatic security services unit provides protocol services to police high command and other police personnel from other countries when requested, and maintains constant touch with the ministry of Foreign Affairs on matters pertaining to state duty of security provision to diplomats and state visitors and above all, benefit from their profound experience and expertise in handling diplomatic affairs.

The significance of this Unit can not be over emphasized. It creates a direct link between the Zambia police service and the diplomatic community, in so doing, allowing the exchange of information of the two entities well being. The incognito role police play in creating investor confidence becomes vivid under the functions of the unit because the diplomatic community who appreciates the security situation of this country gives updates to their nationals who wish to come and invest in the country. The influx of investors into the country who have put their resources in various business enterprises is a testimony to the appreciated security position of the country.

The Unit as at now operates on a centralized perspective, however, Police high command realizes the need to decentralize the unit by establishing diplomatic security services unit offices in all the provincial centers countrywide. The urgency is being necessitated by the escalating demand for the diplomatic security services in all the provinces particularly in areas that have attracted massive investments and in the notable tourism endowed parts of the country.

Virtually, by being a member of the Zambia police service, you all qualify to operate as diplomatic security services unit officers. However, the trait of high level of discipline has to be unquestionably present in the officer. The nature of duty, the people that you interact with and the impression that you create about the Zambia police service and the country as a whole influences command to determine who should be assigned under diplomatic security services unit just like personality influences the selection for officers to serve in the victim support unit. Having studied diplomacy and international relations is another additional value for one to serve in the unit because the officer would be perceived knowledgeable in etiquettes of diplomacy.
