HISTORICAL BACK GROUND OF LAKE SAFETY AND NAVIGATION CONTROL STATIONS
The lake safety navigation control station was established in early 1960 at Lake Kariba under the federal Government of Rhodesia and Nyasaland.
The first Base stations were located at Bumi and Binga on Zimbabwe side, Siavonga, Chipepo, and simazongwe on the Zambian side.
The separation of the control system came about as a result of breakup of Federation and the two Administrations had to start controlling the movement of their vessels separately.
In 1965, the responsibility was handed over to the Police (born of marine) to continue monitoring cross boarder movement of Vessels and people and provide security on the Lake and during that time of the Rhodesia U.D.I which was followed by hostile activities on the Lake Kariba.
