FINGER PRINTS SECTION
By Joyce Nyirenda
Faces can change but fingerprints never change; the picture above shows a man with different looks but he is still the same person. Every human being carries a unique and permanent characteristic regarding finger prints.
Finger prints are unique in the sense that they do not change from birth to death and even after the death of someone until complete decomposition occurs.
Finger print is a reproduction of papillary ridges on the phalanx of the finger and it does not change even after a person grows old.
The first fingerprints Bureau in Zambia was established in 1936. The then Northern Rhodesia Police (N.R.P) decided to become independent and established a fingerprints bureau in Livingstone, Southern part of Northern Rhodesia as the first fingerprints bureau.
Ever since its establishment, the country has maintained the Henry system as a method of classifying and filing of fingerprints. The system is named after Mr Edward Richard Henry who was the Inspector General of Police in Bengal India.
The usage of fingerprints in person’s identification has for a long time offered an infallible way of person’s identification in crime related cases in Zambia. While there are other means of person’s identification, fingerprints has proved to be one of the most reliable methods used in most countries today to investigate criminal cases.
