North Western province is situated in the North western part of Zambia. It has international boundaries with two countries namely: Republic of Angola in the west and Democratic Republic of Congo to the north. The south and eastern parts of the province share provincial boundaries with the Zambian provinces of Western, Central and Copperbelt.


Mining is the main economic activity of north Western Province. Solwezi district has two operational mines namely Kansanshi, Lumwana mines and Kalumbila mines officially known as Trident.

Large scale copper explorations are underway in Kasmpa and Mwinilunga districts. The province has great opportunities for investiments in many areas ranging from agricultural, infrastructure development and energy generation.

These mining activities have attracted investments and specialised manpower from other countries as well as Copperbelt and other parts of Zambia.

The province has nine districts namely; Manyinga, Solwezi, Mwinilunga, Kasempa, Kabompo, Mufumbwe, Zambezi, Ikelenge and Chavuma. Solwezi is the headquarters and also the main gateway to the Copperbelt via Chingola and through to the rest of the Country.


The province is headed by a Commissioner of Police stationed at Solwezi.

Divisional Criminal Investigations Office

The Divisional Criminal Investigations office is headed by an Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP). This is an office that is in charge of all criminal investigations in the Province. All criminal Investigation Officers or detectives fall under this office.


Divisional Prosecutions Office

This is an office that is headed by the Divisional Prosecutions Officer who oversees the prosecution of all cases within the province. All Police prosecutors in this province fall under this office.

The province also has the operations office which handles all disturbances experienced within the province, the Community Services Division (CSD) which works in liaison with members of the public in creating safer communities and the Divisional Traffic Office which addresses all traffic issues within the province. This section is headed by the Divisional Traffic Officer.

All the sections mentioned above report to the office of the Provincial Commissioner.

The province is split into two administrative zones or police districts each headed by an Officer Commanding at the rank of Senior Superintendent.


Solwezi District

Solwezi district comprise of the following Police Stations:- Kasempa, Mwinilunga, Jimbe, Maheba, Mutanda, St. Dorothy, Kyawama and Kanklokolo Police stations. The district is headed by an officer commanding who is stationed at Solwezi. Solwezi Police Station has four Police Posts namely; Bus terminus, Kamijiji, Weighbridge and Solwezi General Hospital.

Mwinilunga Police Station has one Community Police post which is Ntambu.

Zambezi District

Zambezi district has the following police stations; Zambezi, Kabompo, Chavuma and Mufumbwe. The Officer Commanding who is in charge of this district is stationed at Zambezi. The district has one Community police post which is Manyinga based in newly created Manyinga district. The police post was reopened after many years of closure due to the riot by the community which saw police infrastructure burnt down by the local people.
