TRAFFIC OPERATIONS
Zambia Police Traffic Officers are mandated for the enforcement of the Road Traffic Laws (Act No 11 of 2002 of the Laws of Zambia). They enforce the law by ensuring that those who break it are brought to book. Law breakers are subjected to payment of Admission of Guilty money and an official receipt Accounts Form 72 is issued. Perpetual offenders are taken to subordinate courts.
SNAP CHECK POINTS
The officers mount snap check points within towns and on highways. All unroadworthy vehicles are completely removed from the roads, unlicensed drivers are charged, drunken drivers are charged and taken to court and any other law breakers are dealt with according to the specification of the law.
HIGHWAY PATROLS
Officers on the highways conduct motorized patrols using motor bikes and motor vehicles. They also:-
SPEED TRAPS
Excessive speed is one of the major causes of Road Traffic Accidents where lives have been lost. Officers conduct speed traps and charge motorists exceeding maximum speed limits of the roads so that there is reduction in Road Traffic Accidents, eg 15.5% of the Road Traffic Accidents were caused by excessive speed in 2013.
ESCORTS
Police Traffic Officers provide escorts to Very Very Important Persons (VVIPs) and Very Important Persons (VIPs). This is done during conferences, summits, national events, ceremonies, funerals, etc. They also plan for the VVIPs and VIPs use and the exit routes in case of emergencies.
ROAD SAFETY AWARENESS
The Police Traffic Officers conduct Road Safety Awareness program. They sensitize members of the public and motorists on radio, television, print media, ceremonies, roads, brochures and public shows. They also go to schools to educate school children on road safety awareness.
