RIOTOUS UPND SUPPORTERS ARRESTED IN SOUTHERN PROVINCE

Lusaka 16th August, 2016..We have arrested 151 UPND supporters in Southern Province for riotous behavior related to post elections which occurred on 15th August, 2016.

53 people were apprehended in Choma, in Mazabuka, 53, Monze, 26, Maamba, six, Namwala, four, Sinazongwe, six and three in Kazungula District.

In Choma, we recorded 05 cases of Arson after the unruly mob ran amok after declaration of election results and begun setting ablaze other people's property.

In Mwapona Compound, some UPND supporters set ablaze a house belonging to Kelvin Simimba, 45 of Zambia Compound. They also set on fire a restaurant belonging to Juliet Jere, 33 of Choma's overspill destroying various properties.

The unruly crowds also blocked a road using a rail slipper at Muzoka.

There were also riots in Monze Town and surrounding compounds around 1400 hours, where UPND supporters were burning tires and logs later also blocked roads with various objects.

Chibuyu Community Police post and eight (08) motor vehicles packed at the police were damaged, make shift stands at Hamusonde market were burned. 25 males and one female were arrested.

In Maamba, six, (06) people of Chief Mweemba have been picked up for riotous behavior and malicious damage to property. They have been identified as Shemu Siankazi aged 18 years, Wisdom Sikanembe aged 23 years, Chipo Simapemo aged 22years Willy Siasidu aged 35 years, Clement Siamalambo aged 40 years and Lewis Simudini aged 45years. The accused persons blocked Mweemba road with rocks and logs later begun stoning houses perceived to be owned by Patriotic Front supporters. They further stoned Siatwinda Clinic.

In Kazungula district, three UPND cadres were arrested for damaging motor vehicles belonging to some Patriotic Front supporters.

A Toyota Carina registration number ALG 9674, property of Floriah Maliwe had its wind screen damaged at Kaleya, in Mazabuka and another motor vehicle Toyota Ipsum registration number BAD 1141 belonging to Evaristo Malama also of Mazabuka was damaged, an unregistered Honda Fit, property of Constable Malama of Mazabuka also had its wind screen damaged and a house with property belonging to Evans Lungu, a PF supporter of Kabobola Compound was damaged by unknown people.

All those apprehended are detained in police custody and will appear in court soon.

The situation has since been brought under control. We have intensified both foot and motorised patrols in the province to ensure that all those that would want to abrogate the law with impunity are brought to book.
