Five people died on the spot while 16 others sustained injuries after the Toyota Hino truck Reg. No. AKB 1527 they were travelling on was hit into by a passenger train at a rail crossing in Kafue.
The accident happened on 6th April 2015 around 19:00 hours after the driver of the truck failed to give way to the train which had the right of way.
Out of the injured, 13 sustained serious injuries while three were treated and discharged. There were however, no casualties on the train.
The driver of the truck fled the scene of accident and a man hunt has been launched for him.
Meanwhile, an onlooker who wanted to take advantage of the situation by stealing from the scene of accident also sustained serious injuries after being beaten by members of the public.
The bodies of the deceased are lying in Kafue District hospital mortuary while those injured are admitted to the same hospital.
In a related development, we wish to clarify that the official number of people who died in the Mazabuka accident which happened in the early hours of 6th April 2015 is 17 and not as reported in some sections of the media.

Air JordansThere has been an increase of 107 Road Traffic Accidents which left 49 people dead reported this year as compared to 2014 during the Easter holiday when we had 184 with 35 people losing their lives.
Out of the 291 accidents reported this year 21 were fatal, 35 serious while 66 were slight injury accidents. These accidents left 49 people dead, 79 seriously injured and 93 slightly injured.
Out of the 184 accidents recorded in last year, 30 were fatal, 35 serious while 59 were slight injury accidents. The 2014 accidents left 35 people dead, 41 seriously injured and 59 slightly injured.
The increase in the number of people who have lost their lives this year is because of the 22 people who died in the Mazabuka and Kafue accidents.
Most of the causes of the accidents that happened during this period are due to human error. We would like to advise motorists to adhere to road traffic rules and regulations.
Meanwhile, the driver of the Hino truck that was involved in the accident which happened in Kafue at the rail crossing last night has handed himself in to the police. He is currently in custody and will appear in court soon for five counts of causing death by dangerous driving.

Police in Chipata have arrested Langford Soko aged 18 a grade eleven pupil at Anoya Secondary School for attempting to murder his girlfriend who is also a grade eleven pupil at Chipata Secondary School.
The incident happened on 29th March, 2015 at around 20:00 hours in Sido area.
The suspect is alleged to have brutally axed the victim after she refused to abort a four months old pregnancy, severely injuring her left arm which has since been amputated.
The victim is still admitted to Chipata General Hospital.
We are appealing to members of the public in Eastern Province who may have information leading to the apprehension of the suspect to report to the nearest Police Station.

STATEMENT ON THE SUSPENSION OF PARKING OF MOTOR VEHICLES AT POLICE STATIONS
The Zambia Police Service has suspended the parking of motor vehicles at police stations by members of the public for safe keeping, apart from those under Investigations. The suspension is with immediate effect until further notice.
Vehicles that have been involved in serious or fatal accidents will be parked at police stations until they are inspected by the Road Transport and Safety Agency (RTSA) Inspectors after which they will immediately be required to be picked up by their owners or Insurance companies. Vehicles which will not be picked up by the owners will be auctioned by the police using the necessary provisions of the law.

Police in Lusaka are looking for criminals who killed one person and injured four other after they broke into a car park in Kuku compound.
The incident happened on 30th March 2015 around 02:30 hours after the criminals climbed the wall fence of the car park through the back. The criminals who were armed with iron bars and harmers then demanded for money from the five who were inside the car park.
The deceased who died on the spot has been identified as Eric Kazakaza while the other four were rushed to the hospital.
A harmer and an iron bar have been recovered from the scene.
After failing to get any money from the victims, the criminals broke into a shop belonging to the owner of the car park and went away with goods whose value has not yet been ascertained.
We are appealing to members of the public with information leading to the apprehension of the perpetrators of this crime to report to the nearest police station.
