Police on the Copperbelt have formally arrested and charged United Party for National Development (UPND) President Hakainde Hichilema together with his Vice President for Administration, Geoffrey Bwalya Mwamba for Seditious Practices Contrary to section 57 of the Penal Code of the Laws of Zambia and Unlawful Assembly Contrary to Section 74 of the Penal Code of Zambia respectively.
It is alleged that on 26th September, 2016 in Mpongwe District of the Copperbelt Mr.Hichilema and Mr.Mwamba addressed an unlawful assembly at the T-junction.
The duo was summoned to Luanshya Central Police Station for questioning and after interrogations, the two were consequently arrested. Copperbelt Police Commissioner Charity Katanga confirmed the development.
The two have since appeared in Court.
Meanwhile, police also apprehended 61 persons for Conduct Likely to Cause the Breach of Peace of which 41 are males whilst 20 are females. They have since appeared in court and pleaded not guilty.
